Vice President Kamala Harris is once again calling for the elimination of so-called “assault weapons,” specifically AR-15s.
Interestingly, this revelation comes after the vice president said on the debate stage with former President Donald Trump that if she is elected president, she would not take away Americans’ guns, citing the Second Amendment.
However, it appears that Harris has flip-flopped on her claim during the debate since she is now calling for the federal government to eliminate citizens’ assault weapons.
On the debate stage, the vice president touted the fact that she and her husband own guns. She said that, if elected, the government would not take guns away.
“This business about taking everyone’s guns away, Tim Walz and I are both gun owners,” Harris said during the debate on Tuesday night.
“We’re not taking anybody’s guns away,” she added.
Just days later, on X, the vice president cited then-President Bill Clinton’s decision to pass the Assault Weapons Ban 30 years ago.
Harris called for the federal government to “renew” the law that Clinton passed.
“30 years ago, President Clinton signed the federal Assault Weapons Ban into law. During the 10 years it was in effect, people across our nation were far less likely to die in a mass shooting,” the vice president wrote on X. “It’s long past time to renew it.”
Interestingly, NPR, which has been widely considered a left-leaning publication, clarified that Harris still supports strict gun laws in the country.
NPR reported that in 2019, Harris said she owned a gun “for personal safety” since she served as a prosecutor.
Nonetheless, the vice president has consistently been a proponent of strict gun laws and has called for the government to ban so-called “assault weapons.”
In a White House press release from March, Harris announced two gun-related measures that would keep schools “safe from gun violence.”
Among these measures included the implementation of universal background checks, red flag laws and banning “assault weapons.”
“The Biden-Harris Administration will continue to take action to ensure that our schools and our communities are safe from gun violence,” the press release states.
“At the same time President Biden and Vice President Harris call on Congress to pass universal background checks, a national red flag law, an assault weapons ban, and a secure storage law; to repeal the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA), which gives gun dealers and manufacturers special immunity from certain liability for their products; and to increase appropriations to support youth mental health and violence prevention strategies,” the release continued.
In 2022, the vice president also called for a ban on “assault weapons.”
“On the issue of gun violence, I will say, as I’ve said countless times, we are not sitting around waiting to figure out what the solution looks like,” she said at the time.
“You know, we’re not looking for a vaccine. We know what works on this. It includes, let’s have an assault weapons ban,” she added, as reported by CNN.
