Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) claimed that Vice President Kamala Harris won the Democratic presidential nomination in an “open” primary despite having received zero votes.
During an interview with late-night talk show host Bill Maher this week, the former House speaker asserted that Harris ascended her way to becoming the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee in a democratic way, the Daily Wire reported.
However, Harris became the nominee without receiving any votes or taking part in a primary.
President Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race following pressure from high-ranking Democrats, including Pelosi to do so.
After stepping aside, the president endorsed Harris as his replacement, paving the way for the vice president to become the Democratic nominee.
On Friday, during an appearance on HBO’s “Real Time” hosted by Maher, Pelosi said she’s constantly encouraging more women to seek political office.
“Many times I’m encouraging people to run, especially women, to run for office,” Pelosi said.
The California Democrat expressed her belief that “nothing is more wholesome in our political process than that — aren’t we excited about?”
In response, Maher said, “Yes,” prompting laughs from the audience.
“Yes, and sometimes you’re discouraging people to run,” he added, referencing Pelosi’s role in pressuring Biden to step aside. “We’re not going to get into that.”
Pelosi, while smirking, replied, “Well, people make their own decisions.”
“Oh, absolutely they do,” Maher replied.
Pelosi then asserted that Harris took part in an “open” primary, which she said any Democrat could have joined. However, the vice president faced no challengers and garnered the endorsements of high-level Democrats, such as Biden, former President Barack Obama, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and others.
“Anybody could have gotten in,” Pelosi claimed. “She wrapped it up, you have to give her credit for that.”
As Resist the Mainstream previously reported, Pelosi admitted that she pressured Biden to end his reelection bid for the White House.
Earlier this month, Pelosi sat down for an interview with the New Yorker, where she confirmed reports that indicated that she and other Democrats were involved in a “coup” to oust the president.
Pelosi said that although she lauds Biden, she believed he needed to make a decision that would benefit the Democratic Party instead of pursuing his ambitions.
“I think he’s been a really fantastic president of the United States. So I really wanted him to make a decision of a better campaign,” Pelosi said.
“Because they were not facing the fact of what was happening,” she added. “Just a little background. I’ve never been that impressed with his political operation.”
When asked to clarify her comments on Biden’s political operation, the California Democrat responded, “Yeah, I’m not. I mean, I just haven’t. They won the White House, bravo.”
“But so my concern was this ain’t happening and we have to make a decision for this to happen and the president has to make the decision for that to happen. Let me just say, I won’t say necessarily I knew what I was doing at that time. I knew what I was doing in the whole thing, not just that ship,” she continued.
