As Vice President Kamala Harris seeks to be elected president in November, it should be noted that during her unsuccessful 2019 presidential bid, Harris contemplated packing the U.S. Supreme Court, a radical idea that threatens the purpose of the judicial branch.
In 2019, Harris had served as senator of California. At the time, she launched a presidential campaign but ended it shortly after former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI), who has since become an independent, exposed her double standard on prosecutions for marijuana violations in California when she was attorney general of the Golden State.
When asked about the idea of packing the High Court, Harris said that if elected, she would be “open” to doing so.
As of today, Harris is running an extensive campaign against former President Donald Trump in what many believe could be a close race for the White House.
In 2019, the then-presidential hopeful reiterated her support for packing the Supreme Court with leftist judges that match her ideology.
“I’m open to this conversation about increasing the number of people on the United States Supreme Court,” Harris said during a campaign rally in New Hampshire at the time, per Fox News.
This was not the only time Harris expressed her support for court-packing.
During her presidential campaign in 2019, Harris told the New York Times and Politico that she was actively considering adding more seats to the High Court.
While speaking to Politico at the time, Harris said “everything is on the table,” including packing the court.
The New York Times asked Harris whether she wanted to explain her comments on being “open” to court-packing, but she declined.
“I’m just open to it,” Harris replied.
As Fox News noted, in July, the Biden administration unveiled a series of proposals to completely modify the Supreme Court, including adding term limits for justices on the bench, who currently serve lifetime appointments.
President Joe Biden and Harris also advocated adding an amendment to the Constitution that would overturn the court’s ruling on presidential immunity which greatly helped former President Donald Trump as he defended himself against the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) case, which accuses the ex-president of trying to “overturn” the 2020 presidential election and “inciting an insurrection” on Jan. 6, 2021.
However, the Supreme Court ruled that a president cannot be held liable for “official acts” committed during their presidency.
The Biden administration’s proposals also included packing the Supreme Court, according to Trump administration lawyer Mark Paoletta.
“Even though Joe Biden caved to radicals and recently endorsed court packing, Harris is even further to the left of him on this thoroughly discredited idea,” Paoletta said.
In his comments to Fox News, Paoletta cited a claim by Rhode Island Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D) who said Harris’s campaign told him that she supports his proposals to overhaul the Supreme Court are “precisely aligned with what we are talking about.”
“According to Senator Sheldon Whitehouse—who is the single most malignant figure in America trying to undermine the independence of the Supreme Court—Harris supports his court-packing legislation that would disqualify the senior-most Justices from active service, which just so happen to be Justice Thomas, Chief Justice Roberts, and Justice Alito,” Paoletta said.
