Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D), who was on Vice President Kamala Harris’s vice presidential shortlist but was reportedly overlooked because of his Jewish faith, recently said that Democrats should not underestimate former President Donald Trump.
Less than two months away from the 2024 presidential election, Shapiro voiced his concerns over what his party is doing to defeat Trump.
On Friday, the Pennsylvania governor sounded the alarm, saying his party should not take the former president lightly or underestimate him, as reported by the Daily Caller.
The View co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin asked Shapiro if he believes Harris’s decision not to explain her shift on multiple policy positions, such as fracking, was a mistake despite November being around the corner.
“Do you think it’s a strategic mistake that she hasn’t explained some of these positions she’s changed on more ahead of the debate is because she’s obviously going to get challenged on some of these on a debate stage,” Griffin asked.
In response, the Pennsylvania Democrat said it is a “sign of strength” when someone changes their views on significant issues.
“Listen, as much as we want to criticize Donald Trump, ‘He’s a liar, he’s all these things,’ I think you’ve said it before, people know Donald Trump,” Shapiro said on ABC’s “The View.”
“He’s a skilled debate. He is a guy who’s willing to say anything at any time just to get through a question. And he’s a showman, he’s been on TV before. So don’t underestimate Donald Trump,” he added.
As one could imagine, Shapiro went on to praise Vice President Kamala Harris, calling her “tough and nails.”
The Pennsylvania governor suggested that Harris will be prepared to face off against Trump in the first presidential debate on Sept. 10, moderated by ABC News.
Shapiro said the debate would be “tough.”
“Now, I’ve known Kamala Harris 20 years. She is tough as nails. She’s a prosecutor. She’ll be prepared, as was said before,” Shapiro said.
“She’ll be ready to go. But this is going to be a tough debate now,” he added.
“I will also note she is practicing for this debate or meeting with her team in Pittsburgh. So she may drop a ‘yinz’ during the debate. We’ll see if she’s got a little Pittsburgh culture in her after this weekend,” Shapiro continued, per Townhall.
Shapiro’s comments about Trump’s debate skills come after the former president debated President Joe Biden on June 27.
Many political pundits attribute Trump’s debate against Biden as the deciding factor in the left’s decision to pressure the president to end his reelection bid to the White House, given that the president’s deteriorating cognitive health was seen by millions of Americans who watched the debate.
During a rally in Wisconsin on Saturday, Trump said that even if he defeats Harris in the debate, he will still be blasted by the mainstream media.
“If I destroy her in the debate, they’ll say Trump suffered a humiliating debate tonight,” the former president said during his packed rally.
